Supervision

A Word about Sandra

Hello, I hold a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. With approximately 40 years of experience in the human services field, I have worked across various sectors, including government, non-profits, on-reserve communities, international settings, and currently, private practice.

My diversified approach emphasizes body-centered methodologies, focusing on the autonomic nervous system and somatic work. I have substantial supervision experience and actively engage in peer-group consultations with colleagues. Throughout my career, I’ve collaborated effectively both in teams and independently.

In supervision, I adopt a multifaceted approach that encompasses:

  • Knowledge Acquisition: Emphasizing theoretical aspects of counseling to deepen understanding.

  • Skill Development: Introducing practical techniques for immediate application in practice.

  • Self-Exploration: Enhancing self-awareness to understand how counselors’ presence influences their work and learning to harness these insights effectively.

This comprehensive approach aims to foster professional growth and improve client outcomes.

Goals of Supervision

This is a basic list of goals that will be adapted as the group proceeds and according to the overall needs of the group will be expanded on.  This is a starting list of knowledge, skill and self areas to focus on.

Knowledge:

  • Professionalism – how to work with community partners (shared language and safeguard against confidentiality breaches)

  • Finding calm before the work can begin – nervous system and pacing for both you and your client

  • Pacing the story, managing the experience – the story is information and your skill comes from defining what the story means

  • Understanding the process of starting , working and closing effectively

  • Working on a team – your ethical commitment to action and problem solving

  • Trust your guts

  • We all have stuff, we need to know how to contain our stuff

  • Stress management
